Happy 8th!!

Eight years ago today I walked into a tiny room at the local government building. Plastic chairs were set up in the waiting room, people were behind counters calling out numbers. It looked like your basic Secretary of State office, except the language that was spoken was Mandarin and it was thousands of miles away from Michigan.

Some people were there for driver's licenses, deeds and other such paper work. I was there to meet my daughter for the very first time.

Seeing you for the first time will be etched in my memory forever. We had prayed for you for years, planned and prepared for your arrival into our home.

August 8th, 2017 will always be a date burned into our heart and lives. Our first time meeting our Margaret Li Ya.

Maggie still has the best smiles and is one of the kindest souls I know.

She is very interested in how things works. She loves details. She loves to examine and investigate.

She loves to be with her family and is happiest at home. She is our little homebody who cherishes time with her whole family.

Maggie is a great friend and a calm leader. She can quietly lead a room. It is a real gift of hers.

Anyone who knows Maggie is better for it. She lights up our world and we are so thankful that we get to be her parents. It is one of our greatest blessings in life.

Happy 8th Gotcha Day, my girl. We love you so. You are the best of us and we are excited to see what is in store for you.

We love you, Doodle.

Seven!

Seven years ago, we met this sweet face for the first time. We got to hold her in our arms and we worked so hard for a hint of a smile.

Today, just thinking about her brings a smile to our face, as there is usually a smile on her's.

She lights up our life and we can't really even remember our world before her.

Maggie is about to enter the 3rd grade. She does well in school and works hard in all that she does.

She loves to be with her family, play with her sister and just be at home.
Unfortunately, our family schedule doesn't really allow for much home time, but she handles any sport, any venue with grace. She has her bag packed and ready and just needs to know if this event is indoor or outdoor.

Maggie is thriving and we are so proud of her.

Maggie is inquisitive and asks all of the questions, all of the time. And you better give her the right answer or she will keep asking.
I know that her thirst for knowledge will serve her well in life.

While this is the highlight reel, and adoption comes with many layers, Maggie is a joy and being her parents is a true gift. We are so blessed to call her our daughter.
Happy Gotcha Day, Maggie Li Ya!
We love you so!

Six Spectacular Years!

Happy 6th Gotcha Day to our Maggie Li Ya!

Six years ago, I held you in my arms for the very first time.

Today, you randomly crawled into my lap and fell asleep.

We've lived so much beautiful life in between those two moments.

You are kind and strong.

You defend those around you.

You tackle new challenges, even when you are nervous.

You have excelled in school this year, working so hard.

You were chosen by your peers to be the classroom leader. I definitely cried when that happened.

Meeting you on August 7, 2017 was one of the greatest days of my life.

What a blessing to call you daughter.

What a blessing to be your mom and get to see you grow.

We love you so much, Margaret Li Ya Fedell.

Happy 4th Gotcha Day!

Four years ago today, we met this beautiful girl. We walked into a government building, filled with nerves and excitement and walked out with our precious daughter.
What a beautiful day it was!

Maggie has filled our home with love and laughter, lots and lots of laughter!

She is cautious and exact. She is brave and resilient. She loves details.

She loves to "joke you" and dance and sing!

Her favorite animal is a penguin. She loves to wear skirts and dresses. She eats oatmeal every single day. It is very favorite food.

Maggie has adjusted to wearing hearing aids beautifully and will be starting Kindergarten in the fall. She is SO excited to go to her sister's school and ride the bus with her.

Margaret Li Ya, we love you so. We could not imagine our family without you. God has blessed us beyond belief to be able to be your parents. It is a privilege and an honor, and something that we do not take lightly.

Happy Gotcha Day, my girl!
We love you!

3 Years! Happy Gotcha Day!

Oh, our sweet girl. We met your serious little self 3 years ago today and our lives have never been the same.
No longer serious, your smile is contagious.
You are a light in our life and we can't imagine or remember a world without your silly little giggle.
We love how you tackle a challenge with determination.

That determination has served you well, and will take you far in life...even if it makes things a bit challenging on mom and dad right now!
You are thriving and we are so proud of your hard work.

You are fully attached to your family, and love to spend time with your sister and brothers.
You absolutely LOVE to sing and dance, especially to Disney's Zombies and Frozen.
Your favorite thing to do is stand directly in front of the t.v and mimic every single dance move. Usually you are in your preferred clothing attire, a swimsuit.

You like to do things by yourself, changing your clothes multiple times a day!
Only when you are tired do you want help from mom.
Life is strange and chaotic right now. Lots of masks, and distancing and pandemic stuff. We are not sure what the fall will hold for you, but we are sure you will work hard at preschool and with your speech therapy.
You love animals and to explore the world around you.
Playing with your dolls and Barbies is your favorite thing to do!

This shows some of your favorite pastimes, eating snacks and sleeping, all in one photo!

We couldn't image our world without your fun, sweet, silly self!!

On August 7th, 2017, we first laid eyes on you. It was one of the most impacting, spiritual and profound days of my life.
The only other time I can remember feeling this way was when I married your dad.
You were placed in my arms and we were charged with caring and loving you for the rest of your life.
We will always honor the great sacrifices that others have made for you. We will always honor your beginnings, your country and your heritage.
While we gained a daughter that day, you lost everything that you had ever known.
This is something that we will never take for granted, gloss over or ignore.

Adoption is a broken hallelujah. Beauty from ashes.
It changes you.
It refines you.
It is pain and loss and beauty and life.
It is the acknowledgment of all of these, the acceptance of these complicated emotions, and yet, it is Grace defined.
We are so glad that we got you.

We love you, our Maggie Li Ya Fedell.

2 years! Happy Gotcha Day!

Two years ago today we met this sweet face for the very first time. While we had been preparing for her, long before we knew who she was or even before she was born, it still did not prepare me for that actual day. That actual moment when I laid eyes on her, no longer a blurred video or a still photo, but a small, scared, living and breathing child, my heart exploded. There she was. There was our Maggie Li Ya.

It was the most beautiful, bittersweet, emotional day. We gained a daughter. She lost everything she had even known. Adoption comes from a place of deep loss. It finds beauty from the ashes. We found great beauty in Maggie, in her life and forever a part of our family. But, we will always acknowledge that this beautiful life came to us from a place of deep loss.  The loss of her birth family, her country, her heritage.

Meredith Toering said it best. "Adoption. It's that beautiful and broken hallelujah.
There is no erasing the loss of what was-it is also not a replacing, the trading of one story for another.

No- adoption is the total gathering of all you were and are and who you will be. A tender holding of all the parts and pieces of the story, all the chapters that have been written and the ones yet to come.

It's that hand outstretched that grabs on and steps bravely into a story - CHOOSE that story- and says, 'with all of me and all of us, we choose all of you' and it's that little hand that reaches up to take and to trust."

We would cross the world a thousand times to get to you, Margaret Li Ya. And the fact that you trusted us, accepted us as YOUR own leaves us forever humbled.

Your nannies charged us to care and protect you, and it was a charge that we take very, very seriously. What a privilege it is to be your family!

Today, Maggie is three and thriving! She will start preschool in the fall. We are elbow deep in potty training to ensure that will happen! She will continue with her speech therapy as well.

She loves her siblings and has to do EVERYTHING they do. Everything.

She is still obsessed with Minnie Mouse.

She is our social butterfly who likes to say Hi and chat up anyone who will stop and listen to her.

She is a hugger, and will always give hugs when she leaves places. She will hug you, whether you like it or not. Luckily for Maggie, 99% of the people like her hugs! Only a few stand out little boys are not such a fan of Maggie hugs.

She loves her milk but now is completely on cups and no bottles!

She is growing and learning so much.

She is happy and silly and feisty.

Three has welcomed a whole new level of tantrums, but she will usually end them with a silly laugh and try to hug it out. Ah, the emotions of 3 year olds.

While I can still vividly remember August 7, 2017, from my waking moments to the last thing we did as we put her to bed for the first time, I have a hard time remembering what life was like before Maggie. She is so ingrained into our family and a part of who we are that it seems like we have had her forever, not just two years.

We love you so much Margaret Li Ya Fedell.

Happy 2nd Gotcha Day!
